Our heirloom and native seeds come from a carefully curated network and a process rooted in trust, observation, and ecology.

Here’s how we do it:

1. Seed Collection from traditional sources across regions especially in and around Denkanikotai/ Thally, many of whom have saved these varieties for generations.

 2. Multi-Generational Observation: Once collected, the seeds are grown and studied across 3 to 4 generations to document their traits such as taste, shape, yield, pest resistance, and climate adaptability. Only stable lines are moved forward.

3. Selection Based on desirable traits. We identify and preserve seed lines that exhibit strong regenerative traits, resilience to pests, low input needs, better flavor, and harmony with our local agroclimate.

4. Contract Growing with careful isolation. After selection, these seed lines are scaled up through contract growing with small-scale, trusted farmers.

Before planting, we inspect neighbouring farms to ensure isolation distances and prevent cross-pollination especially critical for open-pollinated crops.

By following this approach, we ensure that every seed planted at HemaFarms:

A) Has a documented lineage

B) Grows true to type and is regionally adapted and free from corporate patents or GM traits.

Based on the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model, the Harvest Basket program is a partnership of mutual commitment between our farm and you, a local consumer.

No.

We don't have the resources to constantly monitor partner farms. Most of the farms aren't completely organic. And farms which are organic don't have a succession crop planning. Demand and supply chain fluctuations lead to crop wastage, confusion and delayed/ under payments.

We do buy from partner farms by trust and frequent visits to understand their methods and processes.

We will mention the farmer and the farm in such cases.

Presently we grow only ragi/ finger millet in dry season on paddy growing area for household consumption. Only annual subscribers can buy ragi / finger millet till the stock lasts.

Chemicals and pesticides are extensively used on horticulture crops like vegetables and fruits compared to millets. Millets are much safer to consume even if they aren't organic.
